The chassis offers eight slots, of which six take line cards and two hold the control boards that carry the Routing Engines. Each line card slot receives 480 Gbps of switch fabric capacity, and the six slots accept DPCs, MPCs or up to three FPCs. Four power supply bays serve the DC feeds, and a fully configured router needs two supplies running, with more added for redundancy. Power is zoned, with each supply feeding a defined group of slots plus the fan tray, so slot placement matters for power planning. A single fan tray cools the chassis, and a high-capacity FFANTRAY-MX480-HC version is available. Hardware redundancy covers the power supplies, Routing Engines and control boards, so a fully configured router has no single point of failure.
